The Ultimate Guide to Maternity Photos Near Saint Joseph or Cameron Missouri
Everything You Need to Know About Maternity Photoshoots: From outfit ideas to posing tips — let’s make baby bumps look beautiful!
First of all, congratulations! Whether you're glowing, exhausted, or somewhere in between (likely all three), this season of life is truly something special. And yes — it absolutely deserves to be documented. As a maternity photographer serving the Kansas City and St. Joseph areas, I’ve guided countless mamas through capturing their pregnancy journey in a way that feels authentic, comfortable, and just the right amount of magical.
So, let’s dive into everything you need to know to rock your maternity photoshoot — bump, swollen ankles, and all!
When to Schedule Your Maternity Session
Timing is everything — especially when we’re working with a growing bump. The sweet spot is between 28–34 weeks. This is when your belly is beautifully round, but you’re (hopefully) still feeling mobile and comfortable enough to enjoy the experience. If you're expecting multiples or are showing early, we can adjust the timing to fit your unique journey. I likely wont tell you no to scheduling later (sometimes schedules are nuts!) however, we will discuss your comfort level and understanding that if you go into labor early your maternity session will become a newborn session.
What to Wear: Bump-Friendly Style Tips
Good news: you don’t have to go shopping (unless you want to). I offer a curated client closet with gorgeous bump-flattering gowns and cozy, casual options — all ready to go. But if you’re bringing your own outfit, here are a few style tips:
Maxi dresses are your best friend. Flowy, fitted, or boho — we love the movement and drama!
Solid colors or soft patterns keep the focus on you (and that sweet belly).
Neutrals and jewel tones photograph beautifully in both studio and outdoor settings.
Don't forget your partner! Coordinating (not matching) outfits with your spouse or older kiddos looks polished and cohesive.
Want to show off that bare bump? Let’s do it. Tasteful, artistic shots with fabric draping or crop tops are always an option.
💡Bonus tip: Avoid loud prints, neon colors, or clothing with words/logos
Choosing the Perfect Location
You don’t have to trek to a national park to get dreamy maternity photos. Some of my favorite locations are right here in the greater Kansas City, St. Joseph and Cameron Missouri areas! Whether you want:
Golden hour glow in a field
Studio simplicity with natural light
Urban vibes or cozy at-home lifestyle
…I’ll help you choose the perfect backdrop. (Spoiler: I’ve got a list of hidden gems ready for you.)
Posing Tips for Mamas-to-Be
No modeling experience required — I’ve got you. My sessions are fully guided, so you’ll never feel awkward or wonder what to do with your hands (hint: we’ll probably put them on your belly at least once).
Some of my favorite maternity poses include:
Hands under and above the bump (classic and flattering)
Over-the-shoulder glances for a soft, romantic vibe
Sitting poses to take pressure off your feet and get sweet, cozy shots
Movement shots with fabric flowing or walking slowly for natural moments
And yes — we’ll get solo shots of you and a few with your partner, kids, or even your fur baby if you want to make it a family affair.
Getting Photo-Ready
You deserve to feel like the radiant goddess you are. Many of my clients opt to have hair and makeup professionally done, and I’m happy to share my go-to glam squad recommendations. But if DIY is more your style, just aim for soft, glowing makeup and tamed hair (wind loves a good flyaway moment).
After the Session: Now What?
Your photos don’t belong in a digital black hole. Each session includes a mix of digital files and print credit so you can display your images as wall art, albums, or keepsake prints. Trust me — your future self (and your baby someday) will be grateful for these memories.
Your images will be delivered in an online gallery for proofing and choosing your favorites. Pick your few faves or purchase the whole gallery, I will fully edit at the point, then you can download and order.
Let’s Book Your Maternity Photoshoot!
I get it — life is busy, your to-do list is wild, and sometimes you forget what day it is. But don’t wait too long to book your maternity session! This season is fleeting, and your photos will be one of the few things that last long after baby arrives.

I really loved how knowledgeable you were and how comfortable you made the whole session. It was also really awesome how relaxed and included you made the kids feel.
