St Joseph’s Guide to Must-Have Items for a Natural Hospital Birth
If you’re planning a med-free birth in St Joseph or Liberty I have something you’re going to love!
I’m talking about packing your hospital bag, but this isn’t an ordinary list.
This is one crafted JUST FOR ST JOSEPH (really this works for any hospital) Moms planning a med-free or natural birth. Ready to get started? Let’s make sure your bag is packed with everything you need to feel empowered during your med-free birth.
I was able to have two med free births at Mosaic hospital, but I will be honest I did ask for the meds at the very end of my last birth but ended up pushing little guy out before getting them. I am no expert but have lots of opinions and have gotten to experience a few births and chatted with many new moms. I also have a few friends in the birthing industry that can help you as well. I am not able to take on birth photography at this time but wanted to for awhile so this images are mine. I am able to suggest a few photographer that are able to plan and schedule birth photography as well as doula work. Hope this blog helps in your new baby journey!
First, bring plenty of snacks and your favorite beverages.
There are a few things you'll want to make sure you have on hand to keep your energy up during labor. Pack snacks that are high in protein and easy to eat on the go, like granola bars or nuts. You'll also want to bring along a water bottle or two, as staying hydrated is key during labor.
Consider bringing liquid IV or something else to replenish electrolytes. Pineapple and coconut juice are good natural ways to also get your electolyted, potassium and calories.
Take these suggestions with a grain of salt! Depending on when you start laboring and how soon you go to the hospital extra snacks may not be necessary. I packed a ton of food with my first birth, I also had my husband take me out to dinner when I first started contractions. We then went to the hospital about 6 or so hours later and I ended up throwing up and not wanting or needing to eat again until after delivery. I then wanted to have regular meal. So while snacks are important don’t fill over half you bag with them like I did!
It's always a good idea to have a few changes of clothes with you in case your labor goes longer than expected. After all, you never know what might happen during childbirth!
For natural birth in St Joseph, you want to pack items that will keep you comfortable and relaxed. There are a few things you can bring to the hospital to help make your natural birth more comfortable and relaxed. Consider bringing a loose-fitting nightgown or robe. This will help you stay comfortable during labor, and it will also make it easier for nurses and doctors to check your progress (if you choose). I personally say to leave in a comfy maxi dress, and maybe plan to live in it for a few days. Theres no guessing what size your body will be after child birth and not having to squish into anything with a waist band is better than being annoyed nothing fits.
Bring some washcloths and towels, as well as a small bottle of unscented lotion. These can be used to wipe your face and body during labor, and the lotion can be used to keep your skin from getting too dry or to massage your legs and feet. I got charlie horses in my legs during labor that hurt almost as bad as contractions.
Also, pack a small case with any essential oils or other relaxation techniques that you want to use during labor. This could include a diffuser and some lavender oil, or a positive affirmations deck.
Another game-changer for your birth experience? Bringing a doula! She won’t fit in your hospital bag, but she might carry it for you!
A doula gives support, both emotional and physical, and can be an incredible advocate for you during labor. They're not only there to help you stay calm and focused but also to use their knowledge to enhance your comfort using techniques like massage and position changes. Lucie Keithly is a wealth of information when it comes to birthing naturally at home or in the hospital. If you have any real questions or want to hire her, I highly recommend.
If you're planning on breastfeeding, pack a nursing bra and some nursing pads
Here's a list of items you could pack in your hospital bag:
● A nursing pillow: This will help you to position your baby correctly while breastfeeding.
● Nursing pads: These absorb leakage and help to keep your clothing dry.
● Lanolin cream: This can be used to soothe sore nipples.
● A water bottle: This will help you to stay hydrated while nursing.
By packing these items in your hospital bag, you'll be prepared to start breastfeeding as soon as your baby is born!
A few items that don’t really much explanation but sure are handy:
Your own pillow
socks/slippers
chapstick
hair thing
your own hygiene products
phone charger
soft swaddle blanket
